Perhaps it automatically puts you in the mood to watch a scary movie rife with symbolism and absurd imagery. Maybe you associate it with an artsy feature you forced your relatives to watch and their ensuing hatred of The Lighthouse or Krisha became a running joke in your household. Still, others may have memories of sitting in a theater in 2013 (the first year A24 was releasing movies) and seeing that unfamiliar A24 logo before the trailers for motion pictures like The Spectacular Now. As that logo flickered on the screen, those moviegoers may have thought to themselves “can this new indie outfit make it in the modern cinematic landscape?” There are all kinds of associations one can have with that iconic A24 logo, just as there was no end to the variety of titles A24 put out in 2023.

<![CDATA[The Perfect Holiday Movie For 2023 Is a 55-Year-Old Historical Drama]]> The Lion In Winter is a 1968 film that may not come to mind immediately when thinking of 1960s historical dramas, with it being a big year for the genre. Lawrence of Arabia and Cleopatra are tough acts to follow, but that doesn't mean there's a decent amount of prestige behind this film. Directed by Anthony Harvey, editor of Kubrick classics Lolita and Dr. Strangelove, The Lion In Winter also has what would eventually be an all-star cast. Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn, at the early stages of their careers, are found at the forefront of this fictionalized retelling of King Henry II's reign of the Angevin Empire. This is also the major debut of both Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton.

<![CDATA[The Christmas Western That’s Also One of John Wayne’s Best]]> Few partnerships in cinematic history are quite as successful as John Wayne and writer/director John Ford. Ever since their first collaboration on the breakthrough 1939 adventure film Stagecoach, Wayne and Ford have told innovative stories about the American experience that revolutionized the Western genre. While Wayne starred in many Western classics, his work with Ford often embraced the darker side of the genre; 1956’s The Searchers featured one of cinema’s definitive anti-heroes, and 1962’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance examined the rise of political tension at the tail end of the Western era. Despite the gravity of many of their best collaborations, Wayne and Ford were also able to take a lighter approach to the genre. This is best evidenced by their delightful 1948 western 3 Godfathers, a Christmas-themed adventure movie that drew from Biblical passages. While on the surface it looked like a typical crowd pleaser, 3 Godfathers used its Christmas themes to tell a positive story of redemption.
